Darius J. Salisbury
SUICIDE.
Mr. D. J. Salisbury, one of Valparaiso's Oldest Settlers, Commits Suicide by Shooting Himself.
About 11 o'clock a. m. yesterday shortly after the Daily Vidette had gone to press, a rumor reached us that Mr. Darius J. Salisbury, who lives in the east part of town, had committed suicide. The Vidette reporter went immediately to the supposed place of the tragedy, and the sight that there met his eyes will never be forgotten.
A little to the rear of the old gentleman's house is a small building used as a work-shop.. This place we entered, and there upon the floor, weltering in blood, lay the lifeless body of D. J. Salisbury.
Before killing himself he had spread an oil-cloth on the floor. He laid down upon this and placing the muzzle of a shot-gun to his left temple, fired the weapon off by pushing against the trigger with a stick. The gun must have been very heavily loaded, for it carried away the entire top of his head, scattering the brains promiscuously over the room. Death must been instantaneous. Mrs. Tyler, who lives close by, heard the report and was first to give the alarm.
Mr. Salisbury had been in poor health for a long time past, and had wished sometimes the doctors would give him something to put him to sleep, for night seemed to hang upon his eyes and he could not rest. The malady had been growing continually and at times he was in terrible agony.
Mr. Salisbury was one of the first settlers in this part of the country and was well and favorably known. He leaves a wife and three grown-up boys to mourn his loss. The boys, Marion, Ed. and Joe, are all in business here. Joe was in Chicago and Marion at the club house down on the Kankakee. The old gentleman was 73 years of age. -- Vidette.
