John Rumely
NOTED MANUFACTURER DEAD.
Mr. Rumely, of Laporte, Passes Away at the Age of Seventy-Six Years.
LAPORTE, Ind., Feb. 10. -- John Rumely, until recently a member of the M. Rumely Company, extensive manufacturers, died yesterday afternoon at his residence in this, aged 76 years.
The deceased was a native of Germany and at an early age developed a wonderful mechanical knowledge. With that ambition that always accompanies genius, he decided to come to the United States. He was followed to this country by his brother, Meinrad, and in 1846 the first foundation of the present immense plant here was laid. When the infirmities of age began to weigh heavily upon him John Rumely sold his interest to M. Rumely Company and the venerable manufacturer retired to private life to enjoy the fortune he had accumulated. The deceased was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church and frequently made liberal bequests to further the cause of religion.
