S. P. Robbins
Mr. S. P. Robbins one of the first settlers of Porter county, died at his home in Portage township, Monday at 11 o'clock, April 8th at the age of 80 years. Deceased located in this county in 1834, coming here with a yoke of oxen and a hundred dollars as his start. He took up a claim, and walked to Winnamac to have it entered. By integrity, industry, and good management he amassed a fortune, and became one of he solid men of the county. He served as county commissioner fourteen years, and went out of office with honors. He leaves a family of four children, one son living in Iowa, and one living in Kansas. The other two live in Portage township. The funeral takes place to-day (Thursday) from the church near his home, Rev. S. N. Nelson officiating. A great many people from Chesterton will attend the funeral.
