OBITUARY.
Leland Herbert, son and only child of Harry A. and Vira Beach Phillips, was born near Hebron, Ind., Sept. 9, 1915, and died Jan. 17, 1916, aged 4 months and 8 days. Leland was a constant and patient little sufferer nearly all his brief life, and on Jan. 11th was taken seriously ill and suffered severely and constantly, being a part of the time in violent convulsions, and grew gradually worse until the death angel called him home.
Leland was an extremely sweet-spirited child, so much so that he seemed to savor of the heaven whose gift he was, and was loved beyond measure. Think of the beautiful picture when father, mother, grandfathers and grandmothers, uncles and aunts, ready to welcome with matured love "one of God's choicest gifts"; then of the sorrow of his removal after four months of love and tendril-like twining about the hearts; of the disappointed hopes of fond-hearted parents with this latest blessing suddenly lifted from their arms and placed beyond the reach of all earthly tenderness and care. So little Leland came as pure as a falling snowflake into this home, and here he was idolized, for by his childish lovableness he had conquered all.
Leland, child of sun and smile,
You came to be with us awhile,
And brought but good, O blessed child,
We're glad you came, we're glad you smiled.
'Tis good to know that you were sent
To make us better ere you went
The unknown road so quickly trod
That led you back to heaven and God.
We're glad to know, amid our tears,
And shall feel glad through all the years,
That though your stay was all too brief
You brought more happiness than grief.
Dear God, if this must all be so,
And we stay weeping here below,
Just take him in thine own embrace
And keep him safe before thy face.
