OLD-TIME MILLER ANSWERS TO CALL OF DEATH
(From Saturday's Daily)
George W. Pearce, one of the pioneer millers of the county, died this morning at 5 o'clock in his home on East Indiana avenue, after a long and painful illness. Mr. Pearce had reached the age of 69 years 5 months and 22 days. Death was due to a complication of diseases.
Mr. Pearce was born in Baltimore county, Maryland, in 1846 and was one of a family of seven children. In 1864 he came to Porter county and engaged in the milling business between this city and Wheeler on the well known site of the Pearce mills. In 1874 he bought the entire interest and continued in business there until local milling became a losing proposition because of growth of the spring wheat flour manufacture in the Northwest. He moved to this city and for many years was connected with the Harbeck flour and feed store. After his health no longer permitted the confinement, he worked during fair weather with the city street department. Mr. Pearce enjoyed an extensive acquaintance and friendship throughout the city and the north part of the county.
Where his flouring mill stood, on the margin of a beautiful pond, are now growing fields. A dense woods that stood just wast of the pond is gone, and the place bears little resemblance to its former wild beauty.
Mr. Pearce leaves a wife and children by her as follows: Mrs. Theodore Purdy, Miss Edith Pearce of this place, and Walter Pearce of Chicago. By a former marriage Frank Pearce of Wheaton, Ill., and Mrs. Matie Bunting of East Chicago, survive. C. F. Pearce of this city is a brother of the deceased.
