Thomas Murphy

Another Suicide.
Mr. Thomas Murphy, cooper, shot and killed himself last Tuesday morning at his residence down near the Pittsburg railway in this city. He had been a day or two in trouble from impression that his daughter had been misbehaving, and perhaps from other causes. Close examination showed that he was shot obliquely in the ear. He lived some minutes in apparent consciousness, but made no explanations of the reason of his act. We learn of nothing said by him except when some one said a doctor should be sent for he replied, "not send for doctor."

Coroner Paramore was notified, and called a jury to enquire about the casualty, and, the jury failing to agree adjourned and held another session yesterday. Some thought no one could shoot himself as he was shot, and feared his wife or daughter might have fired the pistol, or that it had gone off in a scuffle, or the like, and hence the disagreement. Finally however a majority agreed and made their verdict that of suicide, as Dr. Newland, after thorough probing testified the ball went backward, upward, and seven one fourth inches deep. Mr. Murphy was a Catholic and was to buried to-day in the unconsecrated part, called the Potters field, of the Catholic cemetery, without the usual religious services.
