DEATHS
JOHN MURPHY.
John Murphy, one of the pioneers of Chesterton, is dead. The end came Wednesday shortly before noon. For the past two weeks he had been feeling badly, but even the family did not think it more than a case of lassitude caused by the hot weather. He had been sitting around the house all morning and had walked out in the back yard. Starting to return to the house he toppled over, and before assistance could reach him, was dead.
Deceased was born June 15, 1823, in Ireland. He was one of three children born to Martin and Mary (Bryne) Murphy, both natives of Ireland. When 19 years of age Mr. Murphy came to the United States and settled in South Hero Island, Lake Champlain, remaining there two years, when he went to Montezuma, New York. After about two years, he went to a town near Auburn, N. Y., and remained until he came to City West in te fall of 1857. After a four years' residence there, he went to Chicago and remained a year. He then came to Chesterton and was engaged as foreman in Mr. Hopkins' cooper shops for six years, when he established shops of his own, but was at one time in partnership with Messrs. Thomas & Hopkins. He was held the office of township trustee of Westchester. He was married June 18, 1848 to Mary Dooly, a native of Rochester, N. Y. Seven children are living. Until the last year or two, since Mr. Murphy closed his cooper shop interests in Chesterton, he lived in Chicago, the family remaining here.
The funeral will be held today, (Friday) from the house, and the remains buried in the Chesterton cemetery.
