Johnny Morrison
Obituary.
The subject of this, Uncle Johnny Morrison, was born in Fermanah county, Ireland, in the year 1802, emigrated to Virginia in 1837, and to Indiana in 1842, and died at his residence in Pleasant township, two miles west of Kouts, on the night of the 24th of Sept., after an illness of five days, at the age of 76. He united with the M. E. church in 1838, and his course though life is marked by an honest endeavor, in every sense, to advance the principles of right. A large concourse of friends followed him to the grave, and there witness the last sad rites. We deem it not necessary to itemize this long journey of life further than to say -- mottoes are stamped along its path, such as are worthy of our careful attention. Death had a sting, and brings a night of sorrow; but let us not forget, of the pure, though the body rests deep in its bed of earth, the soul reclines in the bosom of God. What a superlatively grand and consoling idea is that of death! Without this radiant idea -- this delightful morning star -- indicating that the luminary of eternity is going to rise, life would, to our view, darken into midnight melancholly! The expectation of living here, and of living thus always, would be indeed a prospect of overwhelming despair! But thanks be to that fated decree that dooms us to die; thanks to that gospel which opens the vision of an endless life, and thanks, above all, to that Savior who has promised to conduct all the faithful through the sacred trance of death into scenes of paradise and everlasting delight.. -- Com.
