William Marchant
Singular Suicide.
Wm. Marchant, a farmer nearly 50 years old, whose residence is a mile south of Hardesty's mill, in Union Township, where he has been living with his son and daughter, went to bed as usual Sunday night last, and was called by his daughter Monday morning, but made no answer. She then went to his bed and found it empty. Soon she found the following note upon the table:
"Dear children, friends and neighbors:
When you see this I shall have passed from your sight. My reason is that I have lived as long as I want to. I have been anxious to live till my children were able to take care of themselves. That time has arrived, and now I intend to go. I die in the same faith in which I have lived, the beautiful philosophy of spiritualism. I thank you all for all the kindness and sympathy you have given me, and will always be ready to help you in any way that I can.
Your father, friend and neighbor,
WM. MARCHANT.
After reading this note the daughter looked about the premises, and presently found her father hanging by a rope to a collar beam, in the granary, dead, appearing to have stood upon a barrel while adjusting the rope, and then kicked it from under him.
Coroner Paramore was immediately notified, and as soon as practical repaired to the scene, summoned a jury, and held an inquest, which resulted in a verdict to the above effect. Deceased had upon his person $92.30 in money, out of which the coroner defrayed the expense of the inquest and committed the residue with the body to the charge of the son the older of the two children.
