Ethel Ling
PROMINENT YOUNG WOMAN DIES IN TEXAS CITY
(From Friday's Daily)
Miss Ethel Ling, well known throughout the county, died Tuesday night at Houston, Tex., of ptomaine poisoning, and her body is being brought home to Hebron for burial. Miss Ling went to Welsh, La., a few years ago to teach. There she was suddenly taken ill and, in hopes of saving her life, she was rushed to a hospital in Houston. The funeral will be held in Hebron Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Miss Ling was born in Hebron, and was left an orphan in childhood. She was then taken to Chicago by an aunt, and again death deprived her of her home. Mrs. Sam Rigg, another aunt, southwest of this city, cares for her after that misfortune until she became self-supporting through her education.
Miss Ling attended the schools at Hebron and later at Crown Point, and to round out her education took a course in Valparaiso university. She taught at Boone Grove and other country schools until her departure for the south. She leaves three brothers -- Carl Ling of Crown Point, and Frank and Otto Ling of Hebron -- and a half-sister and half-brother -- Grace Ling and Leland Ling -- also of Hebron. Miss Ling was about 28 years old.
[Note: Ptomaine poisoning is a rarely used medical term for food poisoning caused by bacteria and their toxic byproducts. Ptomaine poisoning is actually incorrectly used to label food poisoning as the ptomaines, formed when bacteria decompose proteins, themselves are not actually harmful but the bacteria and other byproducts of their activity are harmful.]
