On the Death of Miss Ella Knapp.
I sat an hour to-day friends,
Within a tree's fair shade
Where we, the children in old time
Were taught that life would fade.
That book is old whose wrinkled leaves
Now tell that youth has played,
And parents pondered o'er its page
To find their pleasure weighed.
This family tree like all its friends
Has many woes to bend,
And break it hardy heart in twain,
It's leaves mid dust to blend;
An Emma first and Freddie next,
Our Ella last, not all,
Their niece and nephew by their side
At rest on Zion's wall.
What music is so changed friends
Beneath those native trees?
That makes the old tree seem so bare
But the loss of family leaves?
What music in these later days
Will seem one half so sweet,
As echoed from those fallen leaves
Whose forms we cannot meet.
I ponder still, remaining friends,
As from my heart there wells --
A something, hid from all but those
Who build on wisdom's walls;
And trust that in that fairer land
Where storms and frost ne'er come
To tinge the beauty of that clime,
We'll all be gathered there.
