George Klein
Geo. Klein, brother of editor Frank Klein, of Valparaiso, died at his home in Allentown, Pa., on March 1, after a lingering illness of locomotor ataxia. Mr. Klein returned from the funeral this week. Deceased was the ex-chief of the Allentown fire department, and in the account of his death the Allentown Leader devotes two columns. He was a member of several secret orders, and his funeral was a fitting tribute to his memory. The floral offerings were grand beyond description, and gifts from the fire companies and lodges of his town. His injuries were received in a big fire, where he had to jump from the roof of a tall building. He landed on the awning, which broke with his weight, and he received spinal injuries. From a cane he went to crutches, and finally to a rolling chair. This chair was presented him by friends, which he accepted upon the provision that after his death it would go to the Allentown Hospital to be known as the "Geo. J. Klein Memorial Chair." Such was his popularity that when he was appointed fire chief, the companies presented him with a horse and buggy as a chief's team. He also received other gifts such as a gold watch from the department, gold medal, chief engineer's uniform, and dozens of souvenirs. After his retirement the firemen would not part with his old horse, "Dick," and arranged to keep him on the retired list for the rest of his life. At the funeral, the faithful animal followed the hearse to the grave of his master.
