John Kelly
Killed!
At 9:30 last night an accident occurred on the Grand Trunk by which John Kelly, brakeman, on freight train no. 50 lost his life. Just how it happened cannot be ascertained. The train was about half a mile east of the station when Conductor Newell felt the caboose run over something. He hurried to the back end of the car but could see nothing. The train by this time was close to the depot, and as soon as it stopped he searched by Kelley, and, not finding him, in company with the operator the conductor went back and finally discovered Kelly lying across the track, the head and upper part of the body nearly severed, with pieces of flesh scattered all along the track. The coroner was summoned and after an inquest Undertaker Arnold took the remains in charge and prepared them for burial.
Kelly was a single man about 24 years old, and had been with the Grand Trunk company for a good time past. His home was in Decatur, Michigan, where the remains are to be sent.
That part of the road where Kelly was killed seems to be an unlucky place for just about a year ago, in almost the same place a cousin of the deceased met his death.
