Theodora Jane Jones
Death of a Most Estimable Lady.
Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Dec. 7th, a large number of friends gathered at the residence of Charles L. Jones to pay their last tribute of respect to his esteemed mother. Mrs. Theodora, wife of J. W. Jones, whose death occurred at 5 o'clock Monday evening Dec. 5th, the direct cause of her death being catarrhal pneumonia. Though an invalid for years her friends were shocked when her physician announced that her hours were numbered. Her family quickley gathered and all were with her to the last, except her daughter, Mrs. Homer Herrold, of Laporte, who was ill.
Her departure was like one going on a pleasant journey. The years of her life were spent in preparation for the life to come. The devotion to her husband and family, the Christian spirit she extended to her friends, the always readiness to work for the Master, are proofs of the preparations she made. Her pastor, Rev. Thomas Smith, of the Congregational church, delivered a touching and eloquent address, and read a biographical sketch of her life. The choir tenderly sang to the organ accompaniment, three of her favorite hymns, "My Father Looks up to Thee," "Nearer my God to Thee," and "Blest be the Tie that Binds."
the floral offerings were unique. The casket was lined with violets and myrtle, her favorite, boquet of roses and violets, Mrs. Jennie Roberts; boquet of white chrysanthemums, Mrs. John Lundberg; a superb cross and crown of carnations, roses and ferns, her family. The remains were followed to their last resting place in the Chesterton cemetery by relatives and friends, many of an acquaintance of almost 40 years. The solemn committal service was read by Rev. Smith, and the casket slowly lowered into the grave, benediction was pronounced and all that was mortal of our beloved mother is at rest. Many letters of condolence were received by the bereaved family. Among those present from abroad were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Patrick, Valparaiso; Mrs. Jennie Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Shultz, John and Alice Shultz, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Grisdale, Mrs. Mizo, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Atchison, Whiting.
Theodora Jane Cook was born in Springfield, Ohio, March 10th, 1831, being 67 years, 8 months and 25 days old at the time of her death. She was the sixth child born to Major John and Jane Wheeler Cook, who were natives of the Isle of Wight, England, and came to this country in 1819, settling in Ohio.
Oct. 11th, 1853, she was united in marriage to James W. Jones, of Springfield, O., where they resided one year. In 1854 they emigrated to Keokuk, Iowa, then a frontier country, and the trials and incidents of a new country were theirs. In 1861 they came to Porter county, locating at Gossett's Mills, removing in 1868 to Jackson Center, where they lived for 19 years, when in 1887 the family home was built in Chesterton. Nearly three years Mrs. Jones and husband spent visiting with their children, two years of this time was spent with their daughter, Mrs. Henry C. Shultz, in Chicago. Last winter Mrs. Jones suffered a severe attack of facial neuralgia and her life was dispaired of, but with spring and summer came renewed strength. But when autumn came she was attacked with a severe cold and cough which resulted in her death. Last spring they came to their son's home, and were making preparations to spend the winter with their daughter, Mrs. Henry Atchison, of Woodville.
Of a family of seven children all but one lived to an advanced age. Two brothers and two sisters survive her. Her children are, Clara, Mrs. Henry Atchison; Medora; Mrs. Homer Herrold; Beecher, deceased; Alice, Mrs. Henry Shultz, and Charles Liman Jones.
