Tetliff Jones

SUICIDE BY POISON.
TETLIFF JONES TAKES HIS OWN LIFE.
Despondent Over Family Troubles and The Hard Times, He Swallows Twenty Grains of Morphine -- Funeral Was Held Tuesday.

Tetliff Jones, a well-known citizen of Valparaiso, took twenty grains of morphine with suicidal intent Sunday night about 10 o'clock, and died Monday shortly before 12 o'clock. He was despondent over domestic troubles and the hard times. He left a short note directed to the members of the local lodge of the Independent Order of Foresters of America in which he bade them farewell, wished them good fortune, and requested that they look after the welfare of his children. He carried $1,000 life insurance in the Foresters organization, which up to five weeks ago was directed to be paid to his children.

The deceased leaves a wife, four sons and one daughter. The daughter, Nellie, is the oldest child, and was married about a year ago to a young man named Black, of Michigan.

After taking the morphine last night, Mr. Jones lay down on his bed with his clothes on. Only one other member of the family, a young son, was present in the house. Mrs. Jones, who had been in attendance at the bedside of her mother, who is very sick, arrived home at 5 o'clock this morning, and discovered the condition of her husband, at once summoned Drs. Vincent, Loring and Carson, whose efforts to save the unfortunate man were of no avail.

The deceased was 44 years old. He resided at No. 7 Elm street, between Lytle street and Calumet avenue. He was an old resident, and had been engaged in various business pursuits, having at one time owned the West Main street livery barn now managed by C. A. Carr.

The funeral was held Tuesday at 3 o'clock, under the auspices of the Foresters.
