Richard W. Jones
OBITUARY.
Death of Richard W. Jones.
Though it has been known for several weeks that Richard W. Jones was very ill, the announcement of his death yesterday afternoon was a shock to the people. The deceased had so long been identified with the growth and prosperity of the city and county that his death seems to leave a blank page in the county's history.
Richard W. Jones was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, July 16, 1816, consequently he was nearly 69 years of age. When eight yeasr of age, he moved to Wayne county, Ohio, with his parents, where he resided until 1840, when he moved to Valparaiso. This, then, has been his home for 44 years.
The illness, which terminated in his death, seemed to have its seat in the brain. When first taken sick nothing serious was apprehended. He had always been a man of rugged health, and never had occasion to require medical attendance at his home until during his last illness. He breathed his last at five o'clock yesterday afternoon, and was conscious to the last. His widow and two sons and two daughters survive him, two children having died years ago.
The deceased was for two terms in the "Fiftys" sheriff of Porter county. He was a Whig when elected, and though the Whig party was in the minority, he was so popular that he obtained a majority of the popular vote each time he was a candidate. His record for the nearly half a century he has lived in this city has been of such a high character that he had the esteem of all and the warm friendship of the majority.
The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the Presbyterian church, this being the church he generally attended. The pastor, Rev. S. N. Willson, will conduct the services. The remains will be interred in the new cemetery.
