Albert Johnston
CHESTERTON CHIPS
Capt. A. P. Johnston, Albert Johnston and Eric Berg lost their lives Friday morning last in Lake Michigan, at a point north and west of Miller Station. The men were on their way home from a fishing expedition, and when near the shore at the breakwater line a large wave capsized the boat and the men were thrown underneath. The men were all splendid swimmers, and the theory is that they were struck by the boat and stunned, and then swept out into deep water by the strong undertow, else they would have easily gained the shore. The boat had been turned around to back in, as is the custom, when a heavy wave dashed its stern into a sandbar, and the forward end rose into the air, and with a crash, the boat fell bottomside up upon the unfortunate occupants. After a lengthy search, participated in by hundreds of people the bodies of Capt. Johnson and Eric Berg were recovered The body of Albert Johnson has not yet been found. The men were all well-known in Chesterton. Their fishing shanty was just west of the Sabinsky boys. Their boat was found near Roby and 105th streets, Chicago, where it had drifted. The funeral of Capt. Johnson and Eric Berg was held Monday near Lake Station. Capt. Johnson was a member of Court Hobart, I. O. F. of A., and the services were in charge of that order. He carried an insurance in that order for $1,000, which will be paid to his widow. The funeral was attended by a very large crowd from all parts of northern Lake and Porter counties.
