Gust Johnson

FOUND DEAD.
Gust Johnson, an Old Citizen, Meets an Untimely End.

On Sunday morning last the body of Gust Johnson, a well-known resident of this place, was found wedged head downward in a small hole on the south side of T. J. Johnson's livery barn. The coroner was notified and who came down and held an inquest over the remains. The verdict rendered was that deceased came to his death by strangulation.

On Saturday night, Gust Johnson, once one of the most properous businessmen of Chesterton, went to the train at 5 o'clock and bade his wife and family goodbye. The wife had gone to Chicago to see about starting another home. When the train pulled out Gust was without a home on earth. His wife left him some money, and it is supposed that he spent it, for an examination of his pockets showed that he had but five cents. The accident must have happened about 11:30 Saturday night when the victim was intoxicated. He was probably leaning against the barn, staggered to one side and fell in head first. Being in a helpless condition he simply strangled to death. The funeral was held Monday from the rooms of his brother, and was largely attended.

Mrs. Johnson some time ago had Gust's life insured for $3,000 in an Elkhart company, on which she has kept up the policy, and if the company is a good one she will realize that amount. She is now in Chesterton, but her children were taken to Chicago, Tuesday, by a relative, Mr. Kurtz.
