Sophia Isby

OBITUARY.
DIED. -- At her residence in Chesterton, on Tuesday, April 8th, of pneumonia, Mrs. Sophia Johnson, aged 50 years, relict of Oliver Johnson, deceased, after an illness of five days. Mrs. Johnson's maiden name was Isby. She was the mother of four children, three of whom survive her, Charles O. Johnson, the oldest is at Jimulco, Mexico, John A. is clerking in P. A. Johnson's store in Chesterton, and Frank E. (or Eddie as he is called) is at home, together with an adopted child named Effie, who is six years old. Mrs. Johnson was married to Oliver Johnson on the 2nd day of May, 1863, by Mr. Logan, a Presbyterian minister stationed at that time at Valparaiso. Mr. Johnson died on the 16th of April, 1874, leaving the children with no other earthly protection than the mother, Ed only being 20 months old. Mrs. Johnson was respected by all who knew her, and the little neighborhood circle have lost a kind hearted and affectionate friend who was ever ready to minister to the wants of the distressed, and smooth the pillow of the sick and dying. The little church of which she was a faithful member, have lost a true and devout member. And her children a loving mother. Mother! How dear that one word mother. The writer has never forgotten the death of his mother. As I turned to leave the grave after the clods of the valley had hidden her from my view I felt as though I had lost my last and only friend. The child that loves, reveres, and respects the memory of his dear mother, as a general rule, makes a respected and useful citizen.

Mrs. Johnson's remains were laid to rest in the Chesterton Cemetery on Thursday, April 10, 1890. The Rev. Wigren preaching the funeral sermon and conducting the religious services assisted by Rev. Hall and Rev. Sherman. May she rest in peace.

"I will sing you a song of that beautiful Land,
The far away home of the soul,
Where no storms ever beat on the glittering strand,
While the years of eternity roll.

On that home of the soul in my visions and dreams
Its' bright jasper walls I can see;
Till I fancy but thinly the vail intervens
Between the fair city and me.

The unchangeable home is for you and for me,
Where Jesus of Nazareth stands;
The King of all kingdoms forever is he,
And He holdeth our crowns in His hands.

Oh, how sweet it will be in that beautiful land,
So free from all sorrow and pain;
With song on our lips and with harps in our hands,
To meet one another again."
