Daniel Hayes
Killed.
A man by name of Daniel Hayes, who had fallen helplessly into one of the cattle guards east of the depot on the P., F. W. & C. track, Monday morning, was caught by the engine of an incoming freight, and rolled under the pilot when he is supposed to have caught hold with his hands and been carried about forty rods to where first seen by Mr. Lindsey, but before the train could be stopped the unfortunate man loosed his hold and the engine passed over him. He was taken out dead and fearfully mangled. Both legs and the right arm hung in pieces, and the body was also badly cut up. He was a transient resident, who had worked upon the B. & O. railway last fall and winter, and was brother of Mrs. Cornelius Drew who lives six miles north of Valparaiso.
