(Respectfully inscribed to my friend, Mrs. Harrold, on the death of her little daughter Nellie, aged 3 years)
Near to my door, a guest unhidden came,
Entering -- full well I know his face and name --
Little he pitied, leaving me but clay,
Luring a white-winged angel far away
Into the land where mortals may not see,
Exiled from earth and made a spirit free.
Happy to gain a blissful quiet rest,
As child of earth upon a mother's breast
Reposing. No more shall pain molest!
Right welcome to the heart this precious truth
Of an unchanging and eternal youth,
Life evermore and never failing breath,
Defying arrows of relentless death.
