KILLED BY THE CARS.
Otto Gustafson, While On His Way Home From a Dance, Meets a Horrible Death.
Otto Gustafson, bar tender for Fred Seiverts at Porter, was struck by an east bound freight train on the Michigan Central at 4 o'clock Sunday morning, and instantly killed. The accident occurred about half way between Porter and Old Porter.
Gustafson had been to the dance Saturday night, and took a young lady living at Old Porter home. He was very tired, and the supposition is that he fell into a dose as he was returning home and was walking asleep. Engineer Wm. H. Henry says he saw the man a few feet ahead of his engine, and the next instant he struck him. The entire train passed over his body and it was badly mangled. The train was stopped and the crew picked up the body and brought it to the station. Undertaker Lundberg afterwards got it and brought it to his undertaking rooms. Coroner Coates held an inquest on the body Sunday afternoon. The train crew were present, but only the testimony of John Rozean and Engineer Wm. Henry was taken. The coroner complimented the crew for the humanity in removing the body to the station.
The remains were turned over to the relatives for burial. Gustafson was 23 years old and, unmarried. The funeral was held Monday.
