ODE
ON THE DEATH OF MARTIN GRAY,
Sung at his Funeral by the Cadets of Temperance, Valparaiso Section, No. 28
Yes! We remember well the day,
When thou an Orphan came,
To walk with us in Virtue's way --
With us, enroll'd thy name.
No Father look'd on thee and smil'd.
Nor mother spake her joy;
Alone thy stood -- a wandering child,
A friendless Orphan boy!
You came to join our youthful band --
We pledged our love to thee,
As brothers, joined in heart and hand,
A peaceful family.
Our band is broken -- thou art dead!
We know that God is just;
And in submission bow the head,
And render up our trust.
To God, who doeth all things right,
We meekly pray, to give
Our hearts a pure and heavenly light,
That we in Heav'n may live.
