Sophia Friday
NEWS OF THE WEEK.
Death, that ruthless, grim and dreaded foe of human nature, is at all times unwelcome, but some times cases happen which compel more than ordinary attention and sympathy. Since THE TRIBUNE has been published we have never been called upon to chronicle a case more sad, more ruthless, or more sweeping than the one in the family of Henry Friday, a respected farmer of Liberty township. A short time since diphtheria attacked on of his six children. It soon spread until five of these were down with it. Last Saturday two of these, Johann, the eight year old, and Sophia, four years old, lay corpses, both dying within two hours of one another. Before their funeral, and while the two little white coffins were in the parlor, the baby died. Three corpses soon lay in the one room, and two other children lay struggling for life. The grief-stricken parents were appalled. Neighbors lent a kindly hand, but the fearful blow had dazed them all. The other two children may recover, and they may not. The funeral of the first two was held Monday from the German Lutheran church. The funeral of the baby was held Wednesday. They were both largely attended. Mr. and Mrs. Friday have the sincere sympathy of the whole community, for those who know them, know they have great odds to contend with, and those who can bear them resignedly are indeed heroes, not only in the sight of God, but among their fellows.
