Azariah Freeman
LETTER TO THE MESSENGER.
In Memory of a Valued Friend.
WASHINGTON, D. C., March 7, 1885.
EDITOR MESSENGER:-- My dear old friend, Mr. Azariah Freeman, is no more on earth. I knew him many years, and met him many times in the discharge of duties. I never heard his sincerity and integrity called into question. I liked him for his old-fashioned honesty. I always knew where to find him. When he gave his word I knew what he would do. He was my true friend. I trusted him implicitely. Though quiet and unassuming in his manners, he was ever thoughtful of the conduct of men. The character, the action, the words, and facial look of men were grasped by his thoughtful mind, and they rarely deceived him. He tried to live right and do right. He and I were devoted friends.
He stood so faithfully by me against base calumny and all abuse so unjust, and he stood by me against the mean work of envy dressed in the ourward garb of friendship, as true and faithful as did the famous guard to the Old Napoleon. I deeply mourn his loss and I cannot refrain from uttering this humble tribute to the kind old friend, now no more.
