Lola Bartholomew Cullen
In Memoriam.
In less than one short year, vanished forever from a happy home and the presence of those who loved her on earth, Mrs. Lola Bartholomew Cullen, in the nineteenth year of her age.
She passed away sweetly and patiently, and entered the unseen portals after suffering unspeakably. God called her little babe a few days previous and gave it the "crown without the cross" and the privilege of that beautiful greeting after the mother's upward flight.
Since childhood has Lola's mind been centered on the Truth, and there was a constant evolution of that peace which the gospel alone can afford. Can parents see the triumph of this death -- which was owing to religious faith -- without realizing the necessity of Godlike instruction? It is only by comparing her present blessed life with out poor unsatisfying one, that we can comprehend the lesson and bow submissively.
If an attempt was made to eulogize, there nothing new could be said, for she was widely known and there was ever that outpouring of gentleness and love, which all will acknowledge as beautiful.
Almost peerless as a Christian, she was no less cherished as a wife, daughter, sister, friend.
It seems but a day since she stood with Rev. Cullen, taking -- with all sincerity -- the marriage vow, and sallying forth from her father's roof to grace her new home in Bloomfield, Iowa. In her departure the community sacrificed more than it could tell; its best wishes accompanied her, and a long and profitable life was its hope and its prayer.
Although her life was of few years, she failed not in duty, lost not in comeliness.
The bereaved husband and family have the sympathy of all, yet we know that for comfort they go to the Great Comforter, and while they know that under the brown earth is her casket, yet they realize that in Heaven is her soul.
Lola was as modest and retiring as she was gifted and beloved and to all her "Memory is her best epitaph."
