Three Children Die from Use of Worm-Seed Oil!
Daniel Croft, who lives some four miles north of Wheeler, had four children sick, three weeks ago, apparently with worms. Accordingly, he went to Hobart and procured at Dr. Miller's drug store a half ounce of worm-seed oil, which was so labeled on the vial given to him, with a prescription of four to eight drops for a dose, three times a day for two days, to be followed with salts. On his return the children were so much improved that none of it was given till Tuesday morning of last week, Nov. 2, when it was given to them all according to prescription. The second child refused to swallow it but spit it out, and now is well. The oldest one and two youngest took down the medicine, but all grew worse and died; one Friday night, one Saturday night and one on Monday afternoon. The first died quietly, but the other two in spasms, though all were sleeping. Three physicians were at the inquest, who agreed that the medicine seemed genuine, the prescription proper, and as far as could be learned no injudicious thing had been done throughout their treatment. Dr. Morrical was the attending physician. The verdict at the inquest was in substance that the children came to their death by use of impure medicine, but that no one was in fault. The oldest child that died was aged about six years. Their names were Eliza, Minnie and Daniel. The funeral was Tuesday.
