Russel Crawford
Obituary.
Mr. Russel Crawford died at his home in Chesterton last Sunday morning. He had been a sufferer or pneumonia for about two weeks.
Mr. Crawford was born in Erie county, New York, June 10th, 1817. He removed to the west about thirty years ago, and for a number of years has resided in Chesterton, where by reason of his industry and integrity he became greatly respected. For five years he had charge of our school building, as janitor, and in that capacity was known to all the little people of the town for his agreeable and congenial disposition towards them. He was a christian, as his life and death clearly manifested. He was a member of the Methodist church. Mr. Crawford fought in our late war, and was a member of the A. B. Wade Post, G. A. R., No. 208, which body took charge of his remains time of death. The funeral services were conducted in the M. E. Church. The attendance was very large and much respect was shown to the departed veteran. The sermon was preached by Rev. West, at the conclusion of which the Post re-formed in procession under command of Commander J. C. Beck and conveyed the remains to the cemetery where the dead comrade was buried according to the custom of the Post, Chaplain Castleman reading the funeral service, which was conducted by prayer and the benediction by Rev. West.
