Death of George Crawford.
George Crawford, one of the oldest settlers of the Lake region, and a relative of the Morgans', died at his home in Laporte last Sunday. As he is well-known by many of our readers, we publish the following brief obituary, from the Public Spirit.
If we had not so recently presented to our readers an extended biography of George Crawford, we should do so now that he is gone. He was born in 1799 and was well on toward 89 years of age. Only one older man than he lives now in the county. He died on Sunday morning and at ten o'clock to-day his funeral was attended by a large number of our people, his friends and neighbors, and many who were related to him by ties of blood and marriage. Funeral services were held at his late residence conducted by Rev. Geo. W. Boyd, D. D., who was assisted by Rev. Walter Scott. Dr. Boyd's discourse was a most appropriate sermon on the subject of Immorality and the Inheritance of the Saints in the course of which he made frequent allusions to the character of the deceased as a man and a Christian, and the assured hope that was his. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Door Village near which was the home of Mr. Crawford for many years.
George Crawford was more than an ordinary man. When in his prime, he was possessed of great physical vigor. Morally he was firm as the rocks, and in mental grasp of events few were his equals. His convictions were strong, his opinions well matured, and the rugged honesty of his nature was always prominent. He met his fate like the good man that he was, and he leaves behind a precious memory to all who knew him.
