Sarah Clayton
Obituary.
Died, on Thursday night, July 3rd, Sarah, the beloved wife of James Clayton, at her home, after an illness of fourteen days. She had been ill for some time, but did not break down until two weeks previous to her death, when an examination revealed the fact that she was suffering from malignant cancer in the stomach. Though the best medical skill was employed and every effort made to save her life, it was of no avail. The funeral was held Sunday, the services being conducted by Father Kroll in the Catholic church of Chesterton, and the remains interred in the Catholic cemetery. As evidence of the high esteem deceased and family were held, almost the entire community attended the funeral.
Mrs. Clayton was born in Calais, Maine, April 20, 1851, and was one of twelve children. She was united in marriage to James Clayton, at Boston, Mass., in 1867, and with her husband, came to Chesterton on May 23, 1882. She was the mother of eight children, five of whom survive her, four girls and one boy, the youngest being but three and a half years old.
Her sad death is a terrible blow to the family, as its members always clung to and looked to Mother, and loved her intensely. In her sickness she showed remarkable fortitude and resignation. A few hours before her death her pastor, Father Kroll, was called, and administered the last sacraments of the Catholic church to her. She was conscious to the last, and went to the great Beyond prepared to meet her God.
May she rest in peace.
