NITRO-GLYCERINE EXPLOSION
At The Aetna Powder Mills Wrecks A Building and Killed A Man.
Tuesday morning, about 8:30 o'clock there was an explosion of nitro glycerine at the Aetna Powder Works, just west of Millers, in which an employe, William Clark, was blown to pieces. As is usually the case with such accidents, the cause remains a secret known only to the unfortunate victims, but it is supposed that Clark was making some repairs in the room in which the explosive was kept, and while using the hammer, jarred the nitro glycerine. The money loss is trifling, aggregating less than $1,000. Clark was a popular young man, unmarried, and his untimely death spreads a pall of gloom over the rest of the men, who little know when his fate may be theirs. The explosion was distinctly heard in Chesterton, and the shock was so severe that in several cases men were knocked off their feet, as was the case of Charles Haslett, who was leading a horse into his barn at the time. The shock threw him up against the horse, and cause the gentleman to think an earthquake was at work.
