CHESTERTON CHIPS
Oscar Christianson, a South Bend policeman, was shot and instantly killed Tuesday night by parties unknown, while patrolling his beat near the Lake Shore tracks in that city. The murder was at first supposed to be the work of tramps, and orders were sent out to arrest all tramps on suspicion between Chicago and Elkhart. The result was that 157 tramps were taken into custody. Deputy Sheriff Billings, of this county, closely watched the Lake Shore road here. Later Lake Shore Detective Carney charged Detective Mullaney, of Chicago, with the murder. Christianson was one of the oldest officers on the force, and one of the best officers in the city.
