WIDOW SUES FOR TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS AT HAMMOND
Lake County Times: On April 9th it will be two years that Fred Carter, former sheriff at Lae county and one of the most popular men in the district, was killed at the Monon's Armour crossing at Cedar Lake while driving his automobile. On Monday the firm of Reilly & Sawyer, representing Mrs. Carter, the widow, who is the administratrix, filed a suit for damages in the superior court asking ten thousand dollars.
The compaint throughout uses the French spelling of the Carter family name, spelling it Chartier. It alleges that the decedent was 42 years of age and that he had an annual salary income of $5,000. It recites further that the crossing was obstructed with shrubbery, trees and undergrowth, and that the approach of the train could not be seen until the automobile was within fifteen or twenty feet of the crossing.
