Belle Carrett
The remains of Miss Belle Carrett were brought here from Whiting Friday for interment. Deceased with Miss Mentzer, whose home is north of Chesterton, and another girl, was out in a row boat on Wednesday, Sept. 15, in Lake Michigan near Edgemore. The boat drifted out to sea, and one of the girls, panic-stricken, jumped out of the boat to pull it to shore. The water was quite deep, and Miss Carrett jumped into the water to save her companion. In her attempts, she lost her life, while the girl she tried to save managed to reach the side of the boat and hang on until some fishermen came to the rescue. Although there were oars in the boat, the girls were too frightened to use them. Miss Carrett was sixteen years old and a beautiful girl. The services were conducted at the Catholic church, and the remains laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery here, where another member of the family is buried.
