THE COUNTY.
HEBRON.
Last Sunday afternoon G. A. Nichols received a dispatch from Douglass, Kans., stating that on the morning of that same day Jay Carman and wife, Cornelia wife of Anson Carman, and Electa wife of James Carman, were all drowned. They were all born and raised in this vicinity, and migrated to Kansas in the spring of 1883. It was a terrible shock to the whole community, and especially to near relatives here. Wm. Nichols and a son of E. B. Pratt, brothers respectively of Mrs. Jay and Mrs. James Carman, started Monday morning to the place of the disaster. The friends of the deceased have the sympathy of the entire community.
The following dispatch was received from Douglass, Kans., Tuesday morning.
DOUGLAS, Kan., July 21. -- Six persons were drowned in Walnut river, seven miles below this place, Sunday morning. Anson Carman and wife and Mrs. James Carman (their son's wife) drove into the stream, which had risen during the night from recent rains, and were swept down and out of sight of the second wagon, which came down to the ford a few minutes later. In the second wagon were Mr. and Mrs. Koats and Mr. and Mrs. J. Carman. They drove into the stream and went down also. Only Anson Carman was rescued alive, and up till 11 o'clock Monday but three bodies had been recovered.
