Clayton C. Canfield
SAD ACCIDENT.
C. C. Canfield, a citizen of Valparaiso, is knocked from a pile-driver, and sustains fatal Injuries.
At about 4:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon, word was received that C. C. Canfield had received serious injuries while at work on a Nickel Plate bridge about 4 miles the other side of Knox, and later word made the report a fact.
Mr. Clayton Canfield was engaged in the building of a bridge for the Nickel Plate railroad company. It was his duty to superintend the pile-driver, and at the time of the accident was stationed at the top of the machine, motioning to the engineer below. He had just motioned to the engineer to go ahead, when the hammer-line broke, striking Mr. Canfield on the head and knocking him to the bridge below, and from there he fell into a ditch -- the entire distance being some 32 feet. He first struck on his shoulder and then on his head.
He was picked up unconscious and brought to his home here in Valparaiso, where he still remains insensible. Drs. Loring and Beer were called, who pronounced the case hopeless -- that he can't live the day out. In fact at the time of our going to press the death-rattle is in his throat. At times during the night he would become restless, at is was all four strong men could do to hold him in bed.
Mr. Canfield is well known in Valparaiso for his integaity and sobriety. He is quite a young man -- in the neighborhood of 24 years of age. He has ever been a respected citizen. He has a wife and one child.
