John L. Brown
Another Veteran at Rest.
John L. Brown died July 15, 1893, aged 54 years, 1 month, and 14 days, at Englewood, Illinois, of apoplexy.
His remains were brought to Chesterton July 18, and interred in the Chesterton cemetery, accompanied by the relatives of the deceased, and an escort of comrades of the G. A. R., of George G. Mead Post No. 444 G. A. R. of Englewood, Ill., of which Post he was a member, and held the office of J. V. C. Religious services were held in the M. E. church at this place, the Rev. Mr. Jesse officiating. The remains were then taken to the cemetery, and their interred in accordance with the beautiful burial service, adopted by the G. A. R., and conducted by Frank P. Simonds, commander of Post No. 444, assisted by H. D. Fulton, P. C., J. A. Curtis, Louis Brooks and other comrades of the G. A. R. Deceased leaves a widow and six children, who were all present except one, a daughter who resides in Manton, Mich.
Deceased was a member of Co E, 73rd regiment Indiana Volunteers, and was taken prisoner in the famous Col. Strait's raid, near Rome, Georgia, and taken to Libby Prison, from which he escaped after a confinement of 18 months. After his return from service he remained in Chesterton a few years, and finally went to Michigan City and from there he went to Englewood. He was married three times. His first wife was the daughter of R. M. Bosley, to whom three children were born. After her death he married a daughter of R. Sackett. She had one child. He then married Mrs. Frances E. Morris, who still survives him and to whom two children were born.
John L. Brown was the son of Leroy and Marinda Brown, who were among the first settlers of Calumet, (Now Chesterton). Leroy died June 7, 1858, and was buried in the Chesterton cemetery, and was N. G. of the I. O. O. F. at the time of his death. Marinda died April 1, 1879. Both are buried on the same lot together with John L. and his first and second wives.
