Walter Bradt

AN anonymous communication querys, where was Prosecutor Peterson that Clark suffered to receive so light a sentence as but 3 years and a half for murder. We do not presume that this light judgment was at all attributable to the absence of the prosecutor in his proper person, as his deputy was likely as efficient as himself. Indeed we apprehended danger that the slayer of his fellow was to be acquitted as insane -- as if such mad behavior did not surely indicate the madness of the man -- and furthermore as if his madness were a proper cause for his acquittal. We of course were gratified to learn that he was not to be discharged to exercise his madness at the next occasion as before with like impunity. The sentence of a criminal to the asylum -- that is, to the penitentiary -- however, ought not to be for a stated term of years, few or many, but till cured, corrected, rendered safe in tendency. The law will sometime be made rational.
