VETERAN OF G. A. R. DIES AT SOUTH BEND
William Bell, a Former Valpo Citizen and a Member of the Local Grand Army Post is Dead.
FUNERAL TO BE HERE
(From Monday's Daily)
William Bell, a veteran of the civil war and a member of Chaplain Brown post, G. A. R., died last evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gordon Longshore, in South Bend, after an illness that had run for five years. Just recently he underwent an operation in the hopes of prolonging his life. Complications set in two days ago, and before some of the relatives could reach South Bend last night, he had died.
The body will be brought here tomorrow noon, over the Grand Trunk, and taken to the home of E. A. Bell, on East Main street. The funeral announcement will be made later.
Mr. Bell had lived in this county most of his life. He came to this city from his farm east of here, and engaged in the flour and feed business with his brother, James Bell. After the death of Mrs. Bell, about 15 years ago, he went to South Bend to reside with Mr. and Mrs. Longshore. He often returned here to visit his many friends and his children.
Mr. Bell had reached his 76th milestone in life. The following children survive: E. A. Bell, Charles Bell, Myron Bell, and Mrs. Rol Ramsey, of this city; Sam Bell and Mrs. Gordon Longshore, of South Bend; Frank Bell and Hubert Bell, of Butte, Mont. The latter is now on his way here. James Bell, of this city, is a brother of the deceased, and Mrs. Eliza Sheffield is a sister.
