James Barrett

DEATHS
A sad and distressing accident happened last Sunday morning which resulted in the death of one of our most highly respected citizens, Mr. James Barrett. Mr. Barrett is a farmer living about a mile north of Chesterton. Last Sunday morning he went out to the barn to feed a colt. His little grandchildren went with him and were spectators of the accident. He was carrying some hay to the colt with a pitchfork, and while entering the stall the colt, an unbroken three-year-old, turned around, and as he did so the point of the fork struck him in the head. This frightened the animal and it began plunging. In its struggles Mr. Barrett became entangled in the hitching rope, and was thrown under the animal's feet and tramped on. Members of the family rushed to his assistance and extricated him from his perilous position, but not until he had sustained fatal injuries. He was injured internally. Medical aid was summoned, and the family pastor Father Kroll, sent for. All that could be done, was done, but at 2 o'clock Monday morning the victim breathed his last.

The funeral was held Wednesday, the services being held in the Chesterton Catholic church, and the remains buried in the Catholic cemetery. The funeral was a very large one, and the sympathy expressed was a fitting tribute to his memory. Mr. Barrett has lived in this township over 40 years, and may well be called one of our pioneers. He was borne in Newton, county Kerry, Ireland, in March 1819 and was consequently in his 74th year. He emigrated to America in 1850, and in 1852 he located in Porter county. He leaves a family of a wife and four children to mourn his loss. For several months past he has been in poor health. His worldly affairs were all in shape to leave, and spiritually he was prepared to meet his Maker.
