Spencer Baker

FROM OUR NEIGHBORS.
HEBRON, IND. -- The funeral of Rev. Spencer Baker was largely attended by his many friends and the Masonic brethren from Valparaiso, Lowell, Wheeler and Kouts, on Sunday, June 14. The deceased was born in Rensselaer County, N. Y., February 9, 1804, and died in Hebron, Ind., June 12, 1891, aged 87 years 4 months and 3 days. He entered the ministry in early life and spent the remaining years of his life preaching the gospel. He moved to Hebron in 1871 from Illinois, his first wife having died before he came here. He was married to Mrs. Currence Carmon in 1872, and she survives him. Two daughters by his first wife are still living and attended the funeral, besides two granddaughters. A son and daughter being dead. He was a member of Hebron Lodge, No. 502 F. & A. M., being its chaplain. He was a Presbyterian by faith and a true christian, and spent many years in trying to raise fallen man to a higher plane in life. The services were held at the house, and Rev. Wilson, of the Presbyterian church of Valparaiso, preached the funeral sermon, after which the Masonic burial services were read, and then the procession started for the cemetery, the Masonic brethren on foot followed by the hearse, and then the mourners and friends in carriages, making the procession a mile long. Arriving at the grave the burial services were concluded. Father Baker was beloved by all, and by the large attendance at the funeral, we a reconfident that his friends were legion.

The church for which he was pastor so many years will miss him, although he has been unable to attend but little in the last few years, having given hp its charge to younger ministers, yet his advice was always sought and whoever came in contact with him loved him as a father and advisor. But his life, as Rev. Wilson so aptly compared to a ripened sheaf of wheat, was ready for the sickle.
