John Bailey
John Bailey, of Crown Point, and several other Crown Point men went with a Chicago hunting party last Friday to the Kankakee marsh in the south part of Lake county, and camped there over night. After dinner Saturday two of the party left for Crown Point, and Bailey took charge of their guns with his own in a boat with which he started off along a ditch away from the rest of the party. At 3 o'clock a Chicago man heard a gun some 20 rods away from him, and then a groan. At night Bailey failed to come to camp, and search was made for him till midnight, without avail. Search was made again Sunday morning, and about noon Mr. Shaffer, keeper of the Hunter's Home at the marsh, found him in his boat dead, with one boot off, one arm nearly severed from the body by a charge of shot, and his side and breast over his heart penetrated by the charge, his watch being thereby but in two. Mr. Bailey's dog was with him when found, and had licked the blood all off his master's body. The body was brought to his residence near Crown Point late on Sunday. A widow and married son mourn for this sad and sudden casualty. The deceased was in high esteem as a citizen, neighbor and friend.
