Cain Austin

OBITUARY.
AUSTIN. -- Mr. Cain Austin was born in Warren Co., Ohio, August 17, 1821, and died May 18, 1879, being aged 57 years, 9 months, and 1 day.

He removed with his parents from Warren County, Ohio, to St. Joseph County, Ind., in 1837. In 1846 he was married to Miss Mary T. Bowker, whom he now leaves as his widow. The fruit of this union was 8 children, two sons and six daughters -- two of whom, a son and daughter, had preceded him to the realm of the dead. In 1846 he removed, with his family, to this county, where he has continued to reside for about 33 years, and was consequently well known.

His religious life was peculiar. In 1843 he became professor of Christianity and united with the Baptist church at Rolling Prairie, Ind., but in 1869 he connected himself with the Christian church. He was the anomalous life of acceding to the truthfulness of the Bible as a revelation from God, and yet, at times, of, failing to live its life. When stricken on his bed to die, this failure of his concerned him more than anything else, and he called around him the people of God to talk to him of Jesus and his mercy. His dying message to the church was given to the writer scarcely two hours before he died, "Tell the church I want them to forgive me for the life I have lived."

When brought face to face with the inevitable, the failures of life startle the soul; but it is then that the ministrations of a merciful and gracious Savior can soothe into peaceful rest.
