Emily Amelia Atwater
Obituary.
Died, Mrs. A. R. Harper, at her home in Chesterton, Oct. 11, 1894. The deceased whose maiden name was Emily Amelia Atwater was born in Canada Sept. 29, 1824. Her people removed to Northern Indiana, settling near Valparaiso, in which city she was united to A. R. Harper Sept. 7, 1845. For nearly fifty years Mr. and Mrs. Harper had traveled the rugged pathway of life together, had shared the joy and sorrow as only a true husband and wife can. Linking their fortune with this community at an early date they had learned the lesson of patience through trial and the privations of an undeveloped country. Mrs. Harper was the mother of eight children, five sons and three daughters, four sons and husband of whom survive her. At an early age she gave her heart to the Lord so that for more than half and century she esteemed it a pleasure to witness for her Master both in her home life and in public. So that in life's autumn she could look back over the years that had flown and have the rememberance of many an act of service performed for Him she had so early learned to love. Exclaiming with the apostle "I have finished my course, I have kept the faith," and with him, too claim the promised reward. Her illness was brief and when death claimed the victory her soul rested with him who loved her and gave himself for her. At the funeral her family were all permitted to be present except her son Homer, who lives at Pierre, S. D. Dr. J. L. Smith of Valparaiso preached a very appropriate sermon from the text found in Pro. 31-30.
