2 Chesterton Men Listed As War Casualties

Two Chesterton boys were today reported casualties on the French war front.

Pvt. Charles Smalley, Jr., has been missing in action in France since Aug. 25, according to a telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smalley, Sr., from the War department.

Pvt. Smalley has been overseas since November and saw action in Italy where he was wounded. The early part of August he moved with his outfit to southern France. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman's badge.

Pvt. James J. Still was wounded in action in France on Aug. 23, according to a telegram received from the War Department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Still. According to advices he was wounded in the leg but expects to get out of the hospital soon and join his outfit. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Pvt. Still has been overseas 31 months with the 7th Engineers.

Soldier From Chesterton Is Reported Dead

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smalley, Sr., of Chesterton, received word Thursday from the War Department that their son, Pfc. Charles Smalley, Jr., who had been reported missing in action on Aug. 25, 1944, was killed in action on that date.

Pfc. Smalley fought in Italy and was wounded there, being awarded the Purple Heart. Then he was sent to southern France. He war the combat infantryman badge.

Besides the parents he is survived by two brothers, Jack and Ronald, at home.

The War Department today announced that Pfc. Frederick J. Cunningham, son of Willie A. Cunningham, of Hebron RFD 2, has been wounded in action in the Pacific region.

Chesterton News Briefs

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smalley received a telegram Thursday morning from the War department informing them of the death of their son, Charles Smalley, Jr., who has been missing in action in Germany since August, 1944. Pvt. Smalley was with the infantry.
