John Kuehl Is Killed; Two Are Wounded
Son of Township Assessor Gives Life On European Front.
A Flint lake boy was reported killed in action, a Valparaiso soldier and a Kouts
seaman were listed as being wounded in casualty reports announced today.
The dead soldier is Pvt. John H. Kuehl, Jr., 24, son of Center Township Assessor
and Mrs. John H. Kuehl, Sr., living at Edgewater, Flint lake.
Young Kuehl was killed in action in France on February 25, according to a
telegram received Friday night by his parents.
Pvt. Kuehl was a member of the 70th Division, known as the Trail Blazer division
of the 7th army. Only recently he had been assigned as first scout of his
division. He arrived in France on Dec. 10 last and on Dec. 22, 1920, and was
graduated from the Liberty Center high school in 1940. Surviving are his widow,
Marcelle, and little daughter, Linda Sue; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H.
Kuehl, Sr., of Edgewater, Flint Lake; four sisters, Mrs. Walter Ohley, of Salem,
Ill.; Mrs. M. H. Streicher, of Chicago, and Mrs. Everett Trapp and Miss Alice
Kuehl, and one brother, Edwin Kuehl, of Edgewater, Flint lake.
Letters were received here over the week-end dated March 1 and 2, from E. Sgt.
Chas. E. Beach, stating he was injured on February 24 and is now confined in a
hospital on the western front. The nature of his injuries was not stated, but he
wrote the letters in a wheel chair. He said he was in good spirits and was
receiving the best of hospitalization. At the time of his injury three men of
his group were killed and five others injured.
S. Sgt. Beach was inducted into army at Fort Benjamin Harrison on January 2,
1942, and was sent to Camp McCain, Miss., where he joined the medical corps.
After basic training at Camp McCain and hospital training at Fort Lawson,
Atlanta, Ga., he spent nearly one and one-half years in Tennessee on bivouac.
Around January 1 he embarked from New York to Europe and on arrival January 19
was sent to the front.
He is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin E. Beach, of the Pioneer Apartments.
His wife and infant daughter reside at 468 Park avenue.
The Navy Department today announced that James Richard Hurley, Seaman 1 c. Naval
Reserve, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur R. Hurley, of Kouts, had been wounded in
action.

Center Twp. Pvt. Killed
Pvt. John H. Kuehl, Jr., son of Center Township Assessor and Mrs. John H. Kuehl,
Sr., of Edgewater, Flint Lake, was killed in action on the western front on
February 25, according to a war department message. He entered the service on
May 22, 1944. He received 17 weeks basic infantry training at Camp Hood, Texas,
and spent one month at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where he became a member of the
famous Trail Blazers, known as the 70th Division. He arrived in France December
10 last and his division was attached to Gen. Patches' 7th Army.
