Pacific War Vet Is Dead

Howard Burns, Jr., formerly of Valparaiso, died on November 29 at the Hines government hospital, Hines, Ill., as the result of a brain tumor, it was learned today.

He was medically discharged from the army on June 19, 1944, after having spent 21 months in action in the Southwest Pacific.

About a month ago his condition became critical and he was taken to the Veteran's hospital at Indianapolis for treatment. Two days prior to his death he was taken to Hines hospital.

Before entering the army April 7, 1941, he was employed at the McGill Manufacturing company.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Burns, Sr., four sisters and three brothers.

Memorial services will be held at the McHugh funeral home in Shelburn, Ind., his former home, with the American Legion post of Shelburn in charge. Burial was in Oak Lawn cemetery.

Attending the rites from Valparaiso was Miss Ruth Barrett, fiancée of the decedent.
