Sheffield Cemetery, Porter TownshipIndex of Sheffield Cemetery burials . . . .
According to the cemetery index for Porter Township prepared by the Northwest
Indiana Genealogical Society:
"Hazzard Sheffield was an early settler in
Porter Twp. and owned
the land around the cemetery in 1876.
Estey Worstell, daughter
of Alpheus Worstell, remembers a
tombstone in back of the big
brick house."
The 1876 plat map for Porter Township indicates that Hazzard Sheffield owned
four parcels of land at that time, comprising a total of 478 acres. Two of these
parcels, a 138 acre parcel located in the southwest quarter of Section 23 and a
160 acre parcel representing the northeast quarter of Section 23, are shown to
have residences built on them in 1876.
The 1895 plat map for Porter Township shows that Alpheus J. Worstell owned the
former Hazzard Sheffield property located in the northeast quarter of Section
23. Thus, it is believed that the Sheffield Cemetery was located in the east
one-half of the northeast quarter of Section 23. However, Porter Township plat
maps from 1876, 1895, 1906, and 1921 fail to indicate a cemetery on the
property.
