Gossett-Hageman Cemetery, Liberty TownshipIndex of Gossett-Hageman Cemetery burials . . . .
The Gossett-Hageman Cemetery is usually referred
to as the Gossett Cemetery and occasionally as the Salt Creek Cemetery in early
cemetery records. The cemetery is located at 899 North on Indiana 149 in a
wooded area behind a house. The cemetery was last read August 1, 1994, by Ed and
Doris Brozak for the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society (NWIGS). The
cemetery had been previously read by Jane Blachley on February 11, 1966. The
cemetery is inactive; the last known burial occurred in this cemetery in 1885.
The cemetery contains the burial of at least one veteran of the War of 1812
(John Hageman) and one veteran of the Revolutionary War (Henry Batton, father of
John Hageman).
The first known burial in Gossett-Hageman Cemetery is that of Nancy Gossett, who
died in 1837. However, in an article published on page 13 of the January 31,
1981, issue of The Vidette-Messenger titled "Hugharts Give Up West Virginia for
Liberty Township," it is mentioned that Susanna (Spencer) Hughart was the first
white person to die and be buried in Liberty Township. The article states that
her burial took place in "Gosserts' Cemetery" [sic] in October 1835. The
newspaper article also mentions that "Mother Hughart" was buried in the cemetery
a short time after Susanna. It is believed that Mother Hughart was Agnes Hughart.
