Dunn Cemetery, Porter TownshipIndex of Dunn Cemetery burials . . . .
The Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society cemetery index for Porter Township
states that:
"The [Dunn] cemetery is 1/2 mile south of
Salem Cemetery
east of the Lake/Porter Line Road in
Section 27. . . . There
were 4 or 5 graves on the widow Dunn
farm buried east of
the Dunn home located in the NW
corner of Section 27. The
last burial was in 1851 and has been
unused since then. Ezra
and Lydia Dunn arrived in Porter Twp.
in 1844. Their first
home was a log cabin until they built
a frame house in 1859.
The people [currently owning the
land] where the cemetery
was supposed to be said they didn't
know anything about the
cemetery in 1993."
The information above from the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society is likely
incorrect with regard to the location of the Dunn Cemetery. The 1876 plat map
for Porter Township indicates that E. A. Dunn, son of Ezra Albert Dunn and Lydia
A. (Ball) Dunn, owned 40 acres located in the southwest quarter of the southwest
quarter of Section 22, adjacent to the northwest quarter of Section 27. The
residence on this 40 acres is shown to be in the extreme southwest quarter of
the property. Thus, the Dunn Cemetery was likely located on the ten acres of
land situated in the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of the southwest
quarter of Section 22, near the residence shown on the 1876 plat map.
